USCIS has published a new version of the Handbook for Employers: Instructions for Completing Form I-9 (M-274) (Rev. 1/05/11). The handbook includes expanded guidance on a number of topics, such as lawful permanent residents, refugees and asylees, and acceptable documents for employees in Temporary Protected Status. Employers enrolled in E-Verify can also obtain the handbook by clicking “View Essential Resources” in the E-Verify user interface.
Among the changes included in the handbook are
- A more detailed explanation of the documents that can be submitted for employment eligibility verification.
- Visuals on filling Form I-9 as well as relevant documents to be submitted.
- Extensive guidance on lawful permanent residents, refugees and asylees, individuals in Temporary Protected Status and exchange visitors and foreign students
- More information on extensions of stay for employees with temporary employment authorization
The new and improved handbook is aimed at bring clarity in filling the I-9, in avoiding fake documents and submission of genuine ones as well as in easy processing of immigrant population who are eligible to work in the USA. The M-274 can be accessed on the USCIS website.
